How Entries Qualify
A person, company or division appears only when a U.S., British or EU government document ties it to Hezbollah in its own words. The tie is quoted word for word, with the field, paragraph or page where it sits.
What Qualifies
- U.S. Treasury. An entry on OFAC's Specially Designated Nationals List qualifies only when its own remarks field
says so: the line
Subject to Secondary Sanctions Pursuant to the Hizballah Financial Sanctions Regulations
, the cross-referenceLinked To: HIZBALLAH
, or a roleof HIZBALLAH
. The name field is never used to qualify an entry. - United Kingdom. An entry on the UK Sanctions List qualifies when its statement of reasons ties the subject to Hezbollah.
- European Union. The EU lists the military wing of Hezbollah; its entry names units used below.
- Courts. A Justice Department release or FBI wanted notice in which the government ties the conduct to Hezbollah. People are named only as charged, with the outcome and its date beside each name.
- Other groups with similar names (Kata'ib Hezbollah in Iraq, Saudi Hezbollah, Ansar-e Hezbollah in Iran, Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, Hizbul Mujahideen) are never counted here.
The Five Figures
- 202
- people on a current U.S. or British sanctions list whose entry ties them to Hezbollah.
- 114
- companies, charities and other organizations on those lists, on the same rule.
- 22
- people whom a Justice Department release ties to Hezbollah by name, charged in 14 federal cases. Those cases charged 39 people in all; the other 17 are co-defendants whom no release ties to Hezbollah by name, so they are neither named nor counted. A person charged in two releases about the same case is one person.
- 9
- of them convicted, by plea or verdict.
- 4
- of them at large, where the release or an FBI wanted notice says so.
The figures are never added together: a financier can be both designated and charged. A delisted designation is shown as delisted, with its date, and is not counted.
Divisions
A division is drawn only when at least one government document names it. Today that is: External Security Organization, Business Affairs Component, Unit 910, Central Finance Unit, Military Wing, Jihad Council, Executive Council, Shura Council, Foreign Relations Department, Al-Qard Al-Hassan, Islamic Resistance Support Organization, Martyrs Foundation, Jihad al-Bina. People and companies sit under a division only when their own document, or the Treasury release that designated them, names that division.
How People Are Named
- These pages spell the group Hezbollah. U.S. Treasury and Justice Department documents spell it
Hizballah
; quotes, list fields and document titles keep the source's spelling, and search finds either. - Names follow the government's own spelling. List entries are shown in mixed case with the given name first; the form as listed sits on each page.
- When a defendant is acquitted or a charge is dismissed, the case stays and the name is withheld everywhere, including feeds and downloads.
- No MEF-party court case filed before 2024 appears.
How the Pages Are Made
A script fetches new Justice Department releases, Treasury designations and FBI notices each day. A language model reads each release and lists the defendants, the court step and the sentence that ties them to Hezbollah. Every quote it returns is matched against the stored text of the document; anything that does not match, any dead link and any document without a primary government source is held for staff and never shown. Short summaries under documents carry a Summary label and are written by the model in neutral terms; they never sit under a person's name. Documents in other languages are shown beside a machine translation only after a second model translates it back and a third scores the two for drift; items scoring below 0.85 are held.

Sources not fetched because their robots rules bar it:

The Unit of These Pages
Each page is a person, a company or a case: the people and companies governments have named, the divisions those documents name, and the court outcome for every defendant, each with its document.
